Symposium 2
Energy Storage and Energy Conversion Systems

Sponsoring Divisions:
Division 3, Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage;
Division 7, Physical Electrochemistry;
Division 6, Molecular Electrochemistry.

This symposium will focus on fundamental and applied aspects of fuel cells, batteries and electrochemical capacitors. Emphasis will be focused on correlating microscopic processes to the performance of actual devices. Papers are solicited in both experimental and theoretical areas, including computational approaches to the better understanding of electrocatalysis and transport phenomena, including current distribution and water management. Particularly encouraged are contributions describing promising new approaches toward the rational design of materials as well as novel methods for their study.

Topics will include
- Methods for the synthesis of engineered electrocatalytic nanoparticles for applications in fuel cells
- Advanced techniques for the preparation of membrane electrode assemblies
- Nanomaterials for energy storage and 3-dimensional batteries
- Novel electrodes and electrolytes for electrochemical capacitors
- Redox processes in fuel cells with emphasis on dioxygen reduction and methanol oxidation
- In situ spectroscopic methods for the study of operating batteries, fuel cells and electrochemical capacitors
- Combinatorial methods for the discovery of new materials for energy conversion and energy storage
- Integration of fuel cells, batteries and/or electrochemical capacitors for hybrid devices or systems.
