Proton conductivity is a key phenomenon in important processes as diverse as the production of electricity in a hydrogen fuel cell and the photosynthesis in green plants. Consequently, proton-transport and transfer phenomena are extensively studied from various angles by material scientists, electrochemists, physicists and biologists. This symposium will bring together experimentalists and theoreticians from these fields working on a wide range of proton conducting materials such as fuel cell membranes, hydrogen bonded liquids, biological membranes, zeolites, solid acids and oxides. It is hoped that encouraging dialogue between researchers in such diverse fields will lead to a better understanding of the underlying elementary processes that could guide the development of new proton conducting materials for particular applications.
